The North Oaks
Learning Collective
Where lifelong learning, creativity, and connection meet — bringing world-class instruction, performances, and ideas directly into the heart of our community.
A Community Built on Curiosity
North Oaks is the premier senior living community in Northwest Baltimore County, distinguished by the richness of experience it offers residents and the depth of engagement woven throughout daily life.
At the heart of the community is a longstanding commitment to lifelong learning — an approach that has shaped North Oaks into more than a place to live, but a place to continue growing intellectually, creatively, and socially.
Through partnerships with leading institutions in higher education, the arts, and faith-based scholarship, North Oaks has built a diverse and dynamic ecosystem of educational programming. These collaborations bring world-class instruction, performances, lectures, and intergenerational experiences directly into the community, enriching residents' lives in meaningful and lasting ways.
The North Oaks Learning Collective (NOLC) is where these partnerships come to life, providing residents with direct access to a world of intellectual and creative engagement.
OUR PROGRAM PILLARS
Five Pathways for Discovery
The NOLC offers an ever-evolving range of opportunities across several key disciplines, ensuring that discovery remains a central part of daily life.
Academic Engagement & Lifelong Learning
Experience the rigor of university-level learning through guest seminars and faculty-led discussions. Programming covers a broad range of topics — from the sciences and humanities to contemporary global culture — bringing world-class expertise directly to our community.
Faith, Ethics & Cultural Dialogue
Engage in meaningful conversations regarding religious traditions, ethical philosophy, and historical perspectives. These sessions provide a space for reflective dialogue and continued learning through visiting scholar talks and diverse cultural presentations.
Arts, Music & Creative Expression
Our community serves as a vibrant hub for artistic growth, enriched by our student artist and musician in residence programs. Partnerships with leading institutions offer residents access to live performances and collaborative instruction. From painting and dance to musical mentorship, the NOLC creates a space where residents and emerging artists connect through the shared experience of creative discovery.
Technology & Digital Literacy
Stay confident and connected in a digital world. We provide one-on-one support and group workshops to help navigate smartphones, tablets, and computers. From mastering new communication tools to internet safety, we ensure you have the skills to stay in touch with what matters most.
Intergenerational Learning
The NOLC bridges the gap between generations through structured exchanges with local students and school groups. These partnerships bring a unique energy to the community, featuring shared artistic projects, student performances, and mentorship-based learning.
STUDENT RESIDENCIES
The Artists & Musicians Among Us
Our Student Artist in Residence and Student Musician in Residence programs bring rising talent from Maryland's most respected conservatories and art schools directly into community life. Residents and students share studio time, rehearsal spaces, and informal conversations that benefit both generations.
These aren't one-off recitals — they're ongoing creative partnerships. A Peabody piano student might workshop a new program with residents over several weeks. A MICA painter might teach a series alongside an in-house show. The result is a community where the next generation of artists isn't just visiting — they're learning, performing, and creating alongside the people who live here.
